The Nordic Fire and Safety Network is a Nordic platform for collaboration on fire safety and system safety in the green transition. The network connects researchers, public authorities, industry, and practitioners to strengthen safety competence and shared understanding across rapidly evolving energy, construction, and digital systems.
A core ambition of NFSN is to promote safety hygiene in all green projects in the Nordics and to push the systematic integration of safety considerations throughout the entire lifecycle of sustainable solutions. As new materials, energy carriers, and data‑driven systems are deployed at scale, safety must be addressed early, continuously, and across disciplinary boundaries.
NFSN balances two complementary perspectives:
- Fire safety: fire dynamics, materials and façades, batteries, hydrogen, evacuation, and emergency response in new technologies and built environments.
- System safety: organisational and human factors, cascading failures, resilience, and governance of complex socio‑technical systems.
Activities
NFSN operates through:
- the Nordic Fire & Safety Days,
- NFSN webinars providing insight into emerging risks (e.g. green energy systems, digitalisation, and new materials),
- knowledge dissemination through reports, position papers, and joint publications,
- cross‑sector exchange between research, practice, and policy,
- work on equality and inclusiveness in safety research and practice.
Through these activities, the Nordic Fire and Safety Network supports a shared Nordic approach where innovation, sustainability, and safety advance together, ensuring that green solutions are not only effective and climate‑positive, but also safe, robust, and trustworthy, building on the Nordic brand of safety.
