We are the Nordic energy institution
Nordic Energy Research is the energy institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers, the official body for intergovernmental cooperation between Denmark, Greenland, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Åland.
We facilitate intergovernmental cooperation, joint research, and knowledge building to address key energy-related societal challenges that are best solved collectively in the Nordics.
We strengthen Nordic energy cooperation and policy development
Our aim is to increase sustainability and energy security for the Nordic citizens, enhance Nordic positions of strength, strengthen competence building, and reinforce international energy cooperation.
To achieve this, we bring together energy experts, policymakers, and researchers across the Nordic region to create a well-founded knowledge base for decision-making and solutions. This enables us to play a key role in shaping the region’s energy future and supporting the Nordic countries in achieving their shared vision of becoming the most sustainable and integrated region in the world.
The national political systems and the intergovernmental Nordic framework are essential arenas for us. Representatives from national funding agencies, energy authorities, ministries, and the Nordic Council of Ministers are vital stakeholders in our work, enabling a dynamic link between research, policy, and impact.
We contribute to a sustainable and integrated Nordic region
Nordic Energy Research was initiated by the Nordic energy ministers in response to the need for greater competence building and collaboration following the oil crisis of the 1970s. Formal cooperation on joint research funding began in 1985. Since then, we have supported collaborative projects and knowledge development within several energy areas, including energy security, renewable energy, and energy market integration.
In 1999, we were established as an institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers to further strengthen intergovernmental cooperation on energy policy, complementing our existing tasks. Today, we also play roles within the European Union’s Clean Energy Transition Partnerships and for the Nordic Council of Ministers for the Environment and Climate. This creates additional synergies both internationally and within Nordic cooperation across borders and sectors.
